A Worforce ignored, passed over, dismissed yet with 20 good years or a new career to offer!

60-80 KNOWLEDGE GROUP WORKERS – How many work in mainstream business today? Where are the job opportunities? Where is Government in all this?

Meet Colin Davies

After 40+ truly rewarding years in a career working in newspaper operations and IT, when leaving at sixty one what awaited me regarding future employment opportunities was a complete shock to the system. I entered a world that was foreign to my expectations, suddenly employment opportunities and my age were off the scale in todays workplace. On the Friday I finished in a senior and respected role with all that knowledge and experience I wanted to pass on, to contribute elsewhere, full of hope and excitement and by the end of the first three months I realised non of that mattered, all stripped away and irrelevant.

It was as if I had stepped through a door to a place where you were no longer of use or service to the rest of the working world, on the outside looking in mainly due to my age which had never been an issue in the past and never on my radar. Only once while chasing new job opportunities was it put to me “off the record – do you mind me asking how old you are!” while others, both companies and recruiters were more subtle.

It took me at least two years after applying for over 100+ jobs and rare interviews to slowly come to terms with where I had landed. I thought I knew things would be different and had sort of planned my approach, the reality was even harsher. Nothing was untouched by this experience as slowly I realised what faced me.

I wanted and needed to work, I had not planned a sudden drop off a cliff and frustration and indeed anger was stirring as the world carried on while I felt helpless and without a voice.

I like a lot of others no matter your background or experience had to slowly begin all over again. Minimum wages, very hard physical work, long hours but met some great and fantastic people along the way, all arriving there through various life routes and necessities, feeling trapped, unwanted and undervalued.

Luckily I managed to keep going and slowly through luck, hard work and the fantastic support of my wife and family managed to slowly climb out of the sea of despair. Unfortunately a lot of good people are still trapped in there with no way out, no voice or any second career opportunity.

To-date my new life career has provided work opportunity through garden work, Covid Testing, supporting role in the Commonwealth Games and exposure to the Motorsport industry. I have also developed a love of amateur Forex trading, a budding inventor and now a fast learning content guru. Yet eight years ago I was written off by society, business and the general workplace consigned to 12 hour gruelling shifts in warehouses.

If you want to be Re.TIRED then fine, everyone to his or her own, however some of us who for whatever reason and we should never judge people as to why, want to keep going, to Re.TRAIN, Re.BOOT, Re.GENERATE

Life has been one long road of hard work and luck to get to this point and to survive is a great personal achievement to anyone of this age group.

These people, this age group, the 60 – 80’s deserve to be recognised for what they are and what they can contribute to society. They are not OLD AGE PENSIONERS as mainstream media and business refer to them. The last thing they want is to be left on the outside, slowly declining in health as a result and the associated costs such isolation and sickness brings to the health service.

They should be recognised and given the support to be brought back into the employment mainstream as a willing, reliable and supportive workforce or budding entrepeneurs ready to serve and contribute to their country and prosperity.

I wanted to pull this site together to record and put out there my experience and feelings on this subject and as I develop it going forward (once I have mastered how to use Wordpress) I would like to open up a discussion forum for others to express their views and experiences. My vision is for a site that can cater for the 60 – 80’s in this digital world, where we can come togther and realise you are not alone at this time in your life. Also to educate others outside of this age group that we are not pensioners destined to sit in a room for 25 years waiting for the grim reaper to call us. We are not ready for this and we have so much life left in us and vitality to offer. The body might be a little weaker but the brain has never been sharper and with a wealth of life and work experience that must be put to good use by generations and businesses following behind.

Who are they?

To be a recognised member of this group is a real privilige and contrary to societies pigeonholes, definitely does not mean old or slowing down – now is the perfect time for our generation to explore new opportunities available to us wherever we can especially in the world of digital online.

Remember we are a bridge back to the values and experiences of the pre digital world. A world we experienced as children/teenagers/young adults and the values we picked up from that time, as well as a bridge moving forward to the exciting and opportunistic digital world opening up in front of us.

We saw and embraced the birth of the internet, the mobile phone, we were the first digital users labouring patiently with initial technology. If we could handle it in the late 90’s we can certainly cope with today’s offerings and with exciting worlds opening up with fantastic subjects like AI then opportunities will no doubt arise and we must be allowed to and want to get involved at all levels.
